Dry ice blasting machines | Dry ice guide | Dry ice disposal | Sublimation of dry ice
Dry ice, the frozen carbon dioxide (CO₂), is a remarkable material that is primarily known for its sublimation. Unlike water, which first melts and then evaporates, dry ice transforms directly from a solid to a gaseous state without passing through a liquid phase. This process is known as sublimation.
The sublimation of dry ice takes place at temperatures below -78.5 degrees Celsius. When the dry ice is exposed to this temperature and the ambient pressure is normal, the molecules of solid carbon dioxide begin to move and change into the gaseous state. This happens because the kinetic energy of the molecules increases as the temperature rises, allowing them to overcome the intermolecular forces of attraction. The result is the release of gaseous carbon dioxide and the formation of an impressive cloud of fog. The substances released by sublimation have a high density, and when they come into contact with warm air, the moisture in the air condenses, creating the characteristic fog
