Dry ice, the frozen carbon dioxide (CO₂), is often used in industry, in the transportation of food and for special effect applications in the entertainment industry. Despite its wide range of applications, however, dry ice also poses a number of risks that need to be taken into account.
One of the greatest dangers of dry ice is the risk of suffocation. During sublimation, i.e. the transition from solid to gas, dry ice releases CO₂. In closed or poorly ventilated rooms, the accumulation of carbon dioxide can lead to a dangerous increase in the CO₂ concentration. This can cause symptoms such as dizziness, headaches, breathing difficulties and, in extreme cases, even affect consciousness or lead to asphyxiation. It is therefore important to always ensure adequate ventilation when working with dry ice.

Another important aspect is contact with the skin. Dry ice has a temperature of around -78.5 °C, which means that direct skin contact can lead to severe frostbite. It is advisable to wear protective gloves and goggles to avoid injury. The hazardous handling of dry ice should also be carefully considered; it should never be stored in a closed container as sublimation can cause pressure to build up which could lead to explosions.
In addition, you should be aware of the potential dangers when disposing of dry ice. It should never be disposed of down the drain or in the toilet, as this can lead to unwanted reactions in the sewer system. It is best to simply collect dry ice in a well-ventilated area where it can sublimate naturally.
