What is dry ice made of?

Dry ice consists of solid carbon dioxide (CO₂). It is formed when gaseous carbon dioxide is liquefied under pressure and then rapidly cooled, causing it to solidify. Dry ice has a characteristic white appearance that occurs when it sublimates – that is, it passes directly from the solid to the gaseous state without first melting. This process creates the well-known “foggy” effect that is often used in theater and film production to achieve a dramatic effect.

Dry ice: Versatile use

Dry ice is used in a variety of applications, from cooling food during transportation to cleaning technology, where it is used as a gentle abrasive to remove dirt and contaminants from surfaces. It is important to note that dry ice can cause severe frostbite if it comes into contact with the skin, as its temperature is around -78.5 degrees Celsius. Therefore, it should always be handled with caution and appropriate protective equipment.
