Graffiti removal - the art of making art disappear

When graffiti appears on a facade, wall or other surface, removing it can be a challenge. Choosing the right graffiti removal method plays a crucial role, as improper cleaning can lead to damage to the surface of the building in question. The wrong cleaning method for graffiti removal could result in damage to the substrate, which could lead to additional repair costs. For this reason, it is important to consider the nature of the substrate, such as masonry surfaces, concrete, or brick, and the type of graffiti, such as spray paint or permanent marker, in order to select the most appropriate method of removal.

In addition, the environmental impact of graffiti removal should also be considered. Some methods of cleaning can be harmful to the environment and health if not applied properly. Therefore, when removing graffiti, care should be taken to choose an environmentally friendly cleaning method that does not release harmful chemicals and protects the surrounding area. Using an eco-friendly method ensures that we do not contaminate the environment or harm the property owner’s health.

It is crucial to choose the appropriate method to remove graffiti paint effectively and gently. With the correct cleaning technique, graffiti can be removed quickly and effectively to restore a clean environment. One effective method for quick graffiti removal is dry ice blasting, which uses dry ice pellets to achieve the desired results.

Graffiti removal with dry ice

Dry ice blasting is a process that uses compressed air and dry ice to remove graffiti. Dry ice is solid carbon dioxide that immediately changes to a gaseous state at room temperature. Dry ice blasting creates a cold effect that removes the graffiti’s paint. As dry ice contains no water, it does not release any moisture into the substrate. The process is therefore particularly suitable for sensitive materials such as wood, paint, metal surfaces, or plaster.

The cleaning process is carried out by shooting dry ice pebbles – solid carbon dioxide – onto the surface. Due to the extreme cold of the dry ice (-78.9 degrees Celsius), the graffiti’s paint immediately freezes and becomes brittle on contact and flakes off the surface. This creates a cold shock effect, which means that the paint can be removed quickly without moisture or chemical cleaning agents. The pellets sublimate, which means that it changes directly from a solid state to a gaseous state without leaving any abrasive residue, leaving only the dissolved paint behind.

Graffiti removal, effective and environmentally friendly

Dry ice cleaning offers many advantages over conventional cleaning methods for removing illegal graffiti. Firstly, the process is eco-friendly as dry ice is a natural product, non-toxic and non-flammable. No chemical vapors or leftovers are produced during the removal of graffiti, which simplifies disposal. On the other hand, dry ice cleaning is gentle on the substrate as it has no abrasive or grinding effect when removing the spray. Dry ice cleaning is also time-saving and efficient. As the paint particles can be removed immediately using dry ice, there is often no need for laborious soaking or rubbing in of cleaning agents. Dry ice cleaning is also extremely thorough and leaves the surface clean and leftover-free. This saves time and money when removing graffiti compared to other cleaning techniques.

Various conventional methods of graffiti removal, including chemical agents, high-pressure cleaners or special graffiti removers, can be harmful to the environment and health and damage the material of the affected area. Therefore, unlike chemical cleaning or abrasive methods such as sandblasting, this process is a gentle method of graffiti removal. It leaves no residue on the façade or other surfaces and does not require costly disposal like chemical cleaning agents or abrasive blasting media. After dry ice blasting, the surface is ready for use again and the graffiti is completely removed.

The gentle effect on the substrate and fast removal of graffiti make dry ice blasting an effective and environmentally friendly alternative to other methods. So if you want to remove graffiti from your house wall or other surfaces, you should consider dry ice blasting.

Removing other types of soiling

Not only graffiti, but also other stubborn soiling such as mold, dirt, and stains can be effectively removed using dry ice. It is used in various areas, including the removal of soiling from machinery, equipment, engines, buildings, facades, monuments, pipelines, tanks, wood and even textiles. In addition, dry ice blasting is fast, flexible and mobile, making it a cost-saving alternative to other cleaning techniques. It is also effective at removing contamination from sensitive equipment and parts as it leaves no harmful leftovers.
