Dry ice blasting machines | Dry ice guide | Dry ice FAQ | Is dry ice dangerous?
Dry ice poses risks such as asphyxiation due to oxygen displacement in closed rooms, frostbite on contact with skin and dangerous pressure build-up in airtight containers, which is why it should be used in well-ventilated areas, with protective equipment and without closed containers.
One of the main dangers of dry ice is the possibility of asphyxiation. In enclosed spaces, the sublimating carbon dioxide can displace oxygen and reach dangerous concentrations. This can lead to health problems or even a serious risk of asphyxiation, which is why it is advisable to always use dry ice in well-ventilated areas.
Another risk is the danger of frostbite. Dry ice has a temperature of around -78.5 °C, and direct contact with the skin can cause serious injury. Therefore, protective gloves should always be worn to avoid skin contact. Eyes must also be protected from dry ice and the CO₂ vapors produced, as they can cause injury.
Furthermore, dry ice in airtight containers can lead to a dangerous build-up of pressure. When the frozen CO₂ turns into gas, the pressure in the container can increase to such an extent that it can burst and cause injury. For this reason, dry ice should never be stored in closed containers.
